The psychiatrist-psychoanalyst Dr. D. has a peculiar and very difficult patient. While examining him and talking to him he faces a man bared from passion for anything that has to do with the worldly. He lacks any desire for life, love, friendship. What Hans Bieberkopf basically does to keep his every day balance, is the power of habit that leads his acts. Dr. Daniel, a man of passions, is absorbed by the strength of the provocatively impassive attitude of his patient’s life, finds it difficult to face him as a doctor and ultimately leads himself to become the 'patient'. The story unfolds through three sessions and the daily life of the characters in the historic centre of Cologne in the year 1960.
