Marvel at the beauty of the 'Meteora' for 82 minutes as narrator Nikos Vastardis takes you on a journey through the village of Kalambaka and Kastraki, the Churches and Monasteries of Meteora and their valuable displays of Byzantine art and iconography. The Meteora is a rock community of 24 monasteris in an area in Thessaly, Central Greece, that have been built on top of towering sandstone rock formations. These 'cliffs of God' are so remote that they are inaccessible by conventional means. They comprise the largest and most important group of monasteries in Greece, after those on Mount Athos, and perch high above the village of Kalambaka. The origins of Meteora date back to the 11th century A.D when monastic hermits fled the busy cities of Medieval Greece for solitude and prayer. To this day there are monks and preists living on the Meteora. The rock monasteries have been declared as an important world hertiage site by UNESCO and are among the most significant historical sites in Greece. Presently, the rock formations are climbed by mountaineers looking for a challenge and are a popoular tourist site as well as religious center.
